We warmly invite you to partner in our Melbourne City Mikvah and it would give us great pleasure to acknowledge your contribution for posterity.
Our Mikvah has a total construction cost of $700,000. This may seem excessive to the untrained eye, but given the complexity of our site and need for heritage and council oversight this is actually a very reasonable figure. Having already received contributions from local enefactors, we are aiming to complete the Mikvah in 2025 by raising a further $500,000 to cover the costs of construction and operation in the first year.
We are seeking your support for this project. Contributions will receive the honour of naming rights to our Mikvah facility – a longstanding testimony of your generosity, and our gratitude.
Donations of $18,000 and above will be placed on a prominent honor board at the entrance of the Mikvah. You can choose to name in honour of a family member or friend or simply place your own name and family on the board. Donations of $1,800 and above will be acknowledged on a second donor board.
Alternatively, you can donate an amount of your choosing towards the Mikvah and your donation will be acknowledged in Mikvah print material and recorded in the shuls archives.
Most importantly, your contribution will ensure that women that may otherwise not use a mikvah at all will have access to a local, high quality, mehudar Mikvah ensuring the continuity of Jewish families in our sacred tradition.
East Melbourne Shul was named by its founders ‘Mikvah Yisrael’, a designation that is still proudly displayed on the Albert St façade. This is a reference to the pasuk (Yirmiyahu 17:3) that says Mikvah Yisrael Hashem – the hope of Israel is Hashem. Rabbi Akivah famously interprets this verse to speak of a literal Mikvah and its purification powers, and links this to the capacity of returning to Hashem in true repentance. It is our hope that together, we can finally fulfill the broadest meaning of Mikvah Yisroel – building this Mikvah to ensure the continuity of Yisrael for generations to come.
